Illustration tutorial
This tutorial uses a traditional line-and-color workflow to make a character illustration. You will draw a pencil sketch, ink the outlines, add base colors, and paint shading. The finished document keeps those parts separate so you can change a color or correct an edge without starting over.
These draft guides describe the intended workflow and include features that are still in development.
What you'll learn
- Sketch with a pressure-sensitive pencil and use selections to adjust part of the drawing.
- Ink on a separate layer, using canvas rotation and undo while drawing.
- Make base-color layers and use masks to refine their edges.
- Add shading on clipped layers, adjust its strength, and export an image.
Before you start
Use Quickstart to check the available version and pen input if you have not done so. Keep the brush list and Layers panel visible; Workspace and canvas explains how to place them around your drawing.
You will use undo, brush-size adjustment, and canvas navigation throughout the tutorial. Put those commands on keys or pen buttons you can reach while drawing, using Input settings. Choose whichever controls fit your device.
Follow the stages in order
Begin with Sketching and keep the same document through all four stages. Each stage explains the tools it introduces, then uses them on the layers from the previous stage. Links within the steps lead to the relevant settings when you need more detail.
Use your own character drawing. The steps refer to hair, skin, and clothing so it is clear which region to edit; choose the pose and colors you want to work with.
