Base colors

Create flat-color layers below the line art for the skin, hair, clothing, and background. Each layer defines a region that can be painted separately.

Selections and masks

Use the lasso or automatic selection tool to select each region, then fill it on its base-color layer. Adjust fill tolerance and expand the selected area where gaps remain under the line art. Use a layer mask to edit the region’s boundary without erasing its paint.

Clipping and alpha lock

Clip shading layers to a base-color layer to confine them to its shape. Alpha lock instead preserves the base layer’s transparency while painting directly on that layer.
